“Leaving a Legacy” was not the book I had anticipated reading. As parents, we want to leave good things for our children, particularly good values and morals as well as fond memories of how we loved and valued people and how we instilled a legacy of faith and trust in God. If we happen to fortunate enough to leave them some financial benefits, that would be an added investment in their lives.
We would hope that they would be financially wise with what we have left behind; however, research shows, according to Dan T. Garrett, that 70% of the wealth left behind by one generation will be gone by the second generation and 90% will be lost by the third generation. This is directly attributable to the failure of families to transfer leadership and values to the next generation. True or not, it is wise to instill in our children a set of core morals and values to follow so that they will live a life void of financial failures due to unwise choices and decisions.
“Leaving a Legacy” is an in-depth guide to making sure your family has a legacy that will last. If you follow the exercises in the book, you will have a valuable financial plan for your family and a method of informing and teaching your family your values and financial wisdom. This book will not be completed in a month and will probably take most of a year to complete. Buy this book only if you are serious about leaving a financial legacy to your children and/or grandchildren and are willing to put forth a great deal of effort to do so.
