Marty, widowed and alone, answers an advertisement for a “lone star bride”, leaves her Texas ranch and sets off to marry Jake Wythe, a man she doesn’t know. He needed a wife to keep up appearances in good society and she needed stability and security away from Texas and ranching. Their sensible arrangement was not to include romance and love, but was only a marriage of convenience.
Marty’s greatest desire was to get away from Texas and ranching and the memories of her deceased husband. Jake’s greatest dreams was to save up enough money to buy a ranch in Texas. When fondness grows between them, the collapsing economy and Marty’s lies come together to test their sensible arrangement. Peterson combines humor, sensibility, romance and adventure and creates a story of love. Marty’s character is sometimes likable and, at other times, such as when she is fighting so hard to take away Jake’s dreams, she can be just as unlikable. She can give him everything he wants but thinks only of herself. He was open about his dreams, but she continued the charade even after she was falling love with him. Normally, I don’t care for too much for historical, romance novels; however, “A Sensible Arrangement” is entertaining and satisfying.
