Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay | Favorite Austen Moments KINDLE HDX Giveaway, Pinterest Contest and Facebook Party! A great first novel written–original and creative

Mr KnightleySamantha is a 23-year-old orphan who lives her life through the eyes of literary characters.  Jane Austen’s characters, Elizabeth Bennet and Emma are her favorites.  She quotes from Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility with some Shakespeare thrown in for good measure.  It is annoying to most of her friends and repelling to others who discount her intelligence.

She wants more than anything to attend Northeastern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism.  Incredibly, an anonymous benefactor (calling himself Mr. Knightley) offers to pay her tuition in return for frequent letters detailing her progress.

As I read Sam’s letters to Mr. Knightley, I watched her grow in maturity and grow out of a need to cling to fictional characters for her confidence and approval.  Except on rare occasions, Mr. Knightley never responds to her letters.  As she pours her heart into her letters, she learns to trust others again and learns that she doesn’t need to hide who she is.

Sam’s story is a great example of what happens when we hide who we are from people we care about.  Not only do we hurt others by our deception, but we also lose their trust.  Read along and experience Sam’s joys and frustrations as she navigates a bold, new world.  Because of the early references to the Jane Austen era, I was in the middle of the book before I realized Sam was in the contemporary world.  By then, it was too late to catch up.  Still, I enjoyed the story.
