” A Thousand Sleepless Nights” a powerful story of redemption

Sometimes when an author changes course and writes outside his comfort zone, bad things happen.  And sometimes, like with Michael King’s “A Thousand Sleepless Nights”, something beautiful follows.  The subject is cancer.  The theme is redemption.   And the result is a work of art.

Jimmy and Nena were meant for each other.  They met on Nena’s father’s farm, married and began their family.  After Nena took over the fledgling farm from her father, she put everything else, including her family, aside to try and save it.  Years later, after the kids have left home and Nena and Jimmy are alone, life turns on them.  Nena is diagnosed with cancer.

I know what you are thinking.  This is another depressing story about cancer, but that’s where you’d be wrong.  Only Michael King could turn a horrible turn of events into a chance for a family to come to terms with their past, their present and their future.  But isn’t that what life’s surprises do?  They force us to make a decision about how we will respond, what we will do in the face of it and where we will eventually end up.

“A Thousand Sleepless Nights” will make you confront hard things.  You will laugh and cry, but, most importantly, you will ponder and finally, you will sing.  Yes, sing because the beauty of God’s redemptive love will flow.

When I closed the book after the last page, all I could say was “wow, that was powerful.”  I hope you will, too.
