Courageous decision brings new life to right-to-life debate

Abby Johnson only wanted to help women, and she thought she was when she began volunteering with Planned Parenthood during college.  After graduating, she worked her way up to Director of Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas.

While Johnson was working at the clinic, there were pro-life demonstrators camped daily outside the clinic fence.  Johnson noticed that there were two different groups—one was vocal and violent and the other was peaceful and praying.  Those who were quietly praying and peaceful worked for the Coalition for Life whose office was just a few blocks away.  Those who were vocal made Johnson feel like she had to protect the women coming to the clinic.

However, the Coalition for Life workers noticed something different about Johnson.  They said she looked lost and uncomfortable.  Several of the Coalition for Life workers and volunteers made an attempt to talk to Johnson who was always friendly.

Johnson’s life changed after watching an abortion.  She realized that Planned Parenthood had lied to her throughout the years.  Johnson’s primary goal was to help women; however, Planned Parenthood, she came to realize, was less about caring about women and more about the money even though they were supposedly a non-profit organization.

“Unplanned” is a documentary that follows Johnson’s decision to become involved in Planned Parenthood and her ultimate decision to change course and start campaigning for the right-to-life.  Even though she did not choose the spotlight, her choices and her inspirational story led her to a public mission to fight for life and help women in crisis.

On Tuesday, May 17, Focus on the Family will host the Unite for Life Webcast at 8 p.m. (all local times) featuring Abby Johnson and special guests, Dr. Peggy Hartshorn, President of Heartbeat International;   Tom Glessner, Founder and President of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates; Melinda Delahoyde, President of Care Net; and Lola French, CEO of the Canadian Association of Pregnancy Support Services.  The webcast is free, but you need to register (Click here).  The Unplanned book and DVD will be available for purchase as a package deal and 33% of each purchase will go to crisis pregnancy centers.
